Inspired by Improv Everywhere's Frozen Grand Central, the people of Perth pull off their own Time Freeze - and The Couch was there to capture it all. In the midst of torrential rains and a thunder storm, everyone met at the State Library to be briefed before dispersing throughout the Murray Street Mall. When they heard the cue (the air horn) they were to FREEZE for 5 minutes. Watch for the expressions of people who don't know what's going on. Thanks to the hundreds of people who turned out. Our 2007 display, sponsored by Messages On Hold and Christmas Kingdom, featured 26,500 light bulbs, 128 lighting channels, 5 kilometres of cable, 250 man hours to set up and just $3.40/night in power to run. This year's display is even bigger and runs from December 5 - 24th inclusive. Come early and pls park on the Foreshore to avoid angry neighbours. Lights were synchronised to various music tracks (this one is Wizards in Winter by TSO) which were heard by motorists on 92.5FM. Those visiting the Bishop Riley Way home in Churchlands WA during December 2007 chipped in $12,000 for the Princess Margaret Children's Hospital. A sterling effort. After suffering two nerve-racking pylon hits in each of his first two training sessions in Perth, Hannes Arch finally settled down in the third and final timed session on Friday before the weekend's Red Bull Air Race to record the second fastest result of the day behind rival Paul Bonhomme. The Brit, the only pilot who still has a shot of snatching the World Championship away from Arch, applied pressure on the second-year sensation from Austria with a superb time of 1:14.34 on the treacherous Perth course full of gusting winds and tight turns. Britain’s Paul Bonhomme scored a stylish victory in the final race of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Perth on Sunday in front of a crowd of more than 200,000 spectators while Hannes Arch was crowned 2008 World Champion after finishing third. It was the 7th podium in 8 races this year for the remarkably consistent ace from Austria. Bonhomme collected his 4th victory trophy of the season with a triumph over compatriot Nigel Lamb on a sunny afternoon in Western Australia to take second place overall for the second consecutive year. Arch became the first European to win the World Championship after Americans Mike Mangold (2005, 2007) and Kirby Chambliss (2006) won the title for the world’s most exciting high-speed, low-altitude precision-flying competition. An extreme sports adventurer, Arch said his unusual background in sports, a superb plane, a strong ground crew and tireless efforts to improve helped him shake up the race hierarchy in only his second season. He rose from 10th in his rookie season to first this year. Most of his rivals in the 12-pilot field have backgrounds in military or commercial aviation. At a good-natured press conference in Perth, both Arch and Bonhomme agreed the results in Perth would only fuel arguments through the off-season about who was really the best pilot in 2008. Arch is the World Champion with 2 wins and 61 points while Bonhomme had 4 wins and 54 points. “Clearly it’s me,” said Bonhomme with a smile when asked what he would tell those debating about which pilot was the best in 2008. The Mariners looked well beaten following two second-half goals by Glory striker Nikita Rukavytsya, and even more so when defender Nigel Boogaard was sent off in injury time for a crude tackle on Adrian Trinidad. But there was a sting in the Mariners' tail and it came when a Dylan MacAllister shot sat perfectly for Sasho Petrovski to slot home with only seconds remaining. The Glory players were convinced Petrovski was offside but their protests fell on deaf ears. The draw sees the Mariners move back into fourth place, ahead of Wellington on goal difference, while Perth climb off the bottom of the ladder ahead of Newcastle, who play on Sunday. Although Perth were probably the better side in the first half, it was the Mariners who led by one at the break and it could have been by more. In a six-minute patch, former Glory player Adrian Caceres had two good chances to score either side of Mile Jedinak's brilliant free kick. Just before the 30-minute mark, John Hutchinson crossed to Caceres who was all alone to head the ball home but he struck the post. Glory goalkeeper Tando Velaphi had no chance just a minute later when Jedinak made the most of a free kick just outside the box after a Jamie Harnwell handball. It could have easily been 2-0 but another strike from Caceres sailed just wide. The Glory came out a different side after halftime and appeared to do enough to set up the win. Rukavytsya's first came in the 62nd minute when he intercepted a wayward Mariners' pass, outran Boogaard and coolly slotted it past Danny Vukovic. Just seven minutes later, strike partner Eugene Dadi set him up with a deft pass in heavy traffic to see Rukavytsya nail his eighth goal of the season. The Glory continued to dominate after that with Trinidad having the best chance to put a third on the board when he hit the post. Perth looked sure of securing a fourth win of the season heading into injury time with Central Coast down a man, but the Petrovski goal put an end to that, and probably their hopes of a late-season revival. Goals to Adriano Pellegrino, Wayne Srhoj and own goals by Sydney defenders Antony Golec and Robbie Middleby helped Perth secure a vital victory which moved them to within one win of the top four. Sydney, whose only goal came from Stuart Musialik, were again booed by their own fans both at half-time and full-time and now need a significant form reversal over the last five rounds to reach the finals. Summing up their performance was a dreadful showing by marquee striker John Aloisi, who produced arguably the worst miss seen in the A-League before being booed off when substituted in the 55th-minute. The pre-season title favourites remain in fifth but the Glory, who are now unbeaten in four games, are now just one point behind them. An interested onlooker in the crowd was former Perth Glory supremo Nick Tana, who had cut all ties with the club in March 2006. Perhaps Sydney FC may not be the only A-League club with some new hierarchy in place next season. Sydney dominated early possession but the Glory grabbed the opener against the run of play in the 11th minute through Pellegrino. Impressive striker Nikita Rukavytsya found space down the left flank and cut a fine low ball back to Pellegrino, who got just enough on his left-footed shot to send the ball trickling into the net. Sydney midfielder Brendan Gan and Aloisi both missed great chances to score while Perth frontman Eugene Dadi flashed a header wide in the 32nd minute. But Perth went up 2-0 two minutes later thanks to Sydney's first own goal. Glory defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley had sent a header into the goalmouth from a corner and Golec, trying to block a Dadi shot, accidentally helped the ball into the net with his thigh. Sydney should have clawed a goal back on the stroke of half-time but Aloisi produced an unbelievable miss. The Socceroos striker, who has scored only two goals in 14 games this season, looked certain to tap in from one metre out after Perth 'keeper Tando Velaphi had parried away an Alex Brosque shot. But a seemingly unbalanced Aloisi failed to even get a touch on the ball with an open goal at his disposal and he was immediately booed by the crowd of just over 12,000.
